Report from Honduras Mission Trip 2019

“Child of God”

In June 2019, a team of 19 people went to Tegucigalpa, Honduras to serve with World Gospel Outreach (WGO) on an Evangelical/Basic Medical week-long mission trip. The Team included four people from Christ Lutheran and 15 from local churches and out-of-state churches. Our theme for the week was “Child of God”. This was Christ Lutheran’s 12th mission trip with WGO.

The trip begins

Our week started out as weeks in the past. We served at one church on Monday and Tuesday and served 1081 Hondurans! Each were given basic medical or dental or optical treatment. and we spoke to about the Gospel of our Lord Jesus. While we were there, 17 people received Christ for the first time and an additional 23 people recommitted their lives to Christ! Also, 194 children were witnessed to in small groups through song, word, games and prayer. Only the Holy Spirit knows how many seeds were planted - praise God! We were also blessed to serve a church member by painting the inside of their two- room house.

Our “day off” on Wednesday was quite different than in the past. We were able to meet up with the WGO Kids (see the website wgoreach.org for more information) and their chaperones and take everyone to the local zoo! We had a picnic lunch with all of them. Then the team members walked to the statue of Jesus in the local park.

Time to be flexible

The big surprise on Thursday was that we were not able to go to the second church as planned due to protestors asking for better employee benefits. This caused the roads to be blocked. So, we regrouped and decided to serve those who have always served us at the mission house! We split into groups and worked 1) outside cleaning up a shed and piling rocks; 2) inside making beds and doing laundry, 3) within the pharmacy and 4) doing a detailed inventory of the kitchen pantry. All of this was a big help as some of the house employees were not able to make it into work because of the road closures.

Knowing by Thursday afternoon that the roads would still be blocked, WGO arranged with a church close to the house for us to paint the inside of their new addition. It was huge!!! We all worked on this which was quite a treat as normally only 3-6 team members get to do physical projects within a week.

Sincere thanks!

None of this could have happened without the prayer, financial support and donations of items from many people from Christ Lutheran and other churches and families. To all of you we say THANK YOU and MUCHOS GRACIAS!

The team raised approximately $10,000 from fundraisers and direct donations. These funds were spent on Spanish Bibles, medicines, canes, vitamins, and Honduran medical personnel. We also were able to provide eyeglasses, paint, water filters, lice shampoo, and various supplies needed to provide the brigades. Thanks to all of the donated luggage, we took hundreds of donated glasses, toothbrushes, tubes of toothpaste and dental floss with us. We also gave baby blankets and prayer shawls made with love by various ladies of CLC to appreciative Hondurans.

Next trip – June/July 2020

We will be going back next June/ July 2020. If you have an interest in being a part of this short term “OUT” mission trip, start praying about it now.

Some thoughts from team members:

This year we had many opportunities to practice being flexible and trusting God. Sometimes we get disappointed when things don’t work out the way we expect but when we are open to God’s expectations, we can always count on the best results. Becca Walls, co-leader

This trip was particularly meaningful for me as it was my mom’s 4th and last trip. It takes a lot of stamina to serve in locations at higher altitudes and humidity than we are used to here in California. God has blessed me greatly with these trips as I have gotten to know my mom and others on a deeper level while serving the Honduran communities. Stephanie Shields

Thursday morning, we were told we would not be able to visit the church where we were scheduled to serve because of protests in the city. I was surprised and disappointed we weren't going. This had never occurred to me as a possibility. We regrouped, adjustments were made, and we were still able to usefully serve - just not as we imagined. This incident reminded me again of who is really in charge. “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.” Proverbs 16:9 Paul Brehm

Traveling to Honduras, serving with WGO, bringing the love of God through medical caring and Gospel sharing, I can’t wait to go again! True, most of the people in Honduras don’t have what we have, not by any stretch of the imagination: we have programs like food stamps, Medicaid, and child services; our babies get immunized against killer diseases like hepatitis, measles, whooping cough, and tetanus; the mosquitoes in the US might carry West Nile virus, but they don’t carry malaria or dengue fever; we can drink water from the tap and from the water hose without fearing that we will pick up a parasite; we have sewer systems and trash pick-up instead of trenches of waste running along the street that we have to step across when we enter and leave any building in town; we have closets full of shoes; we have antibiotics. Most of us have this, and more. Most of the people of Honduras don’t. Yet, I can’t wait to go again! Come with me next year, and you’ll experience why. Pastor Glenn Shelton

This was the most unusual trip and amazing trip for me. God had plans different than ours and, of course, His worked out better! Excited to see what HE does next year. Terry Walls, co-leader
